Where can my children and I learn English?

There are a number of options for you and your children to learn English depending on where you live in New Zealand.

If your children are of school age you should ask their school if they offer an English as Second or Other Language (ESOL) course or can direct you to a similar class for children in the community.

You can also find courses run by community organisations that can provide ESOL classes or tutoring, like English Language Partners New Zealand who offer tutors who can come to your home. These are usually part-time and will be available during the day or evening. Try the Xtend website to find community ESOL courses in your region. Or you could ask someone at the Bureau office to help you find a course in your region. You should look for an ESOL course that is approved by the New Zealand Qualifications Authority.

Another option if you or your adult children want English lessons is to take a bridging course at a university.  These courses are designed to improve your English to the level required for university study. The courses at each institute vary so contact your nearest university for more information.

What free English courses are available for migrants and refugees?

English Language Partners offer free courses to all migrants and refugees. Their courses include a free home English Language tutor, group English Language lessons, English language literacy courses and an English Language for Employees course made to suit people who are working. Other free English courses are available in some regions of New Zealand but not others.

Contact your local Citizens Advice Bureau, or search our database to find out if there is a free English course available in your region.

I'm a senior citizen and want to learn about computers, where should I go?

In addition to the general range of computing courses available  there are also courses specifically for older people.

SeniorNet is a nationwide group dedicated to helping people over the age of 55 learn basic computing skills. See their website to find a learning centre near you.

Contact your local Citizens Advice Bureau to find out more about classes for senior citizens in your region.

As an adult where can I learn maths, English literature etc, and how much does it cost?

Night school, also known as evening classes, is a common term for Continuing Community Education classes held in the evenings. You can learn a lot of different things at night school depending on what is available in your area. You can find a night school using an Internet search e.g. by typing in your town or city and the course you’re looking for, or you can contact your local CAB office by calling 0800 367 222.

Course fees depend on the institution – whether it is a short, standalone course, or study towards a diploma. The institution will have the information you need about course fees and costs.

What hobby classes are available?

Depending on where you live, there might be classes available which teach anything from a foreign language to gardening or sewing skills.

Check at your local library for information on the courses available in your area, or call your local CAB on 0800 367 222. You can also search on Xtend to find a community course in your area. For more information about private hobby organisations in your area check the Internet or your local yellow pages.
