If you have a Telecom phone you can dial 137, wait until you hear it ring and then hang up. If your phone is working then it should ring. Most service providers will have a system for checking the line is working. You can contact your service provider to find out more.

To hide your phone number from someone else's caller display, dial 0197 before the number (if using Telecom or Vodaphone phone or mobile) or dial *32 before the number (if using a TelstraClear phone). If you are with another provider then you can contact them and ask about their policy.

This depends on which phone company your mother is with. You can always call and ask if there are interpreters available. For instance some companies have language centres. This is something you will have to check with your phone company.
