The Privacy Commissioner's Office works to develop and promote a culture in which personal information is protected and respected.
The Privacy Commissioner administers the Privacy Act 1993. The Privacy Act applies to almost every person, business or organisation in New Zealand. The Act sets out 12 privacy principles that guide how personal information can be collected, used, stored and disclosed.
The Office of the Privacy Commissioner is an independent Crown Entity and was set up in 1993. The Privacy Commissioner's Office has a wide range of functions. Some of these include investigating complaints about breaches of privacy, running education programmes, and examining proposed legislation and how it may affect individual privacy.

The Privacy Commissioner became a formal stakeholder in CABNZ's Digital Strategy Project under the terms of reference of the Digital Strategy Community Partnership Fund (a fund administered by the Department of Internal Affairs).
CABNZ received significant funding from the Fund for our Digital Strategy Project which enabled CABNZ to develop a new, integrated technology solution (of which this website is a part) and thereby enhance our service to the public. As a stakeholder to the Project, The Office of the Privacy Commissioner provided advice and expertise to CABNZ in relation to protecting the security and privacy of client personal information within our new technology systems.
